Responsibilities
We are looking for an engineer that can take over the following responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize passive silicon photonic building blocks, including waveguides, edge couplers, grating couplers, directional couplers, MMIs, MZIs, multiplexers, and filters.
  • Perform electromagnetic and photonic simulations using industry-standard tools to validate device performance and support design trade-offs.
  • Develop and maintain parameterized layout cells (PCells), automation scripts, and photonic design libraries to improve design productivity and reusability.
  • Work closely with silicon photonics foundries to understand process technologies, PDKs, design rules, and fabrication constraints.
  • Execute the complete PIC design flow, including schematic capture, simulation, layout generation, design verification, DRC, and tape-out preparation.
  • Collaborate with packaging, test, and system engineers to ensure successful integration of photonic integrated circuits into optical transceiver and switching products.
  • Analyze fabricated devices, correlate measurement results with simulations, and drive continuous design improvements.
  • Contribute to the development and qualification of process design kits (PDKs) and reusable photonic IP blocks.
  • Support laboratory testing, characterization, and performance evaluation of photonic integrated circuits.


Preferred / Bonus Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are optional and a plus to have:

  • Design and optimization of active photonic devices, including high-speed traveling-wave modulators, carrier-depletion modulators, germanium photodetectors, and laser integration approaches.
  • Experience with high-speed optical interconnect architectures, including LPO, NPO, and CPO systems.
  • Perform RF and electro-optic co-design for high-speed photonic devices operating at 100G, 200G, and beyond per lane.
  • Contribute to system-level modeling and performance analysis of optical transceivers and photonic switching engines.


Required Qualifications and Skills
A good candidate should have the following qualifications and skills:  

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field with a focus on integrated photonics.
  • Hands-on experience in the design, simulation, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
  • Strong understanding of integrated photonics fundamentals, including waveguide optics, passive photonic devices, optical coupling structures, and interferometric circuits.
  • Experience with photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical FDTD, MODE, EME, INTERCONNECT, DEVICE, or equivalent commercial/open-source tools.
  • Experience with photonic layout generation and scripting using platforms such as IPKISS, Nazca, GDSFactory, KLayout, or similar frameworks.
  • Familiarity with silicon photonics foundry PDKs, design rules, and tape-out processes, and having a tape-out experience with at least one silicon photonics foundry and its PDK.
  • Proficiency in Python scripting for design automation, data analysis, and test characterization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently drive design projects from concept to fabrication.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Responsibilities
We are looking for a highly skilled (Senior) Active Silicon Photonics Design Engineer to join our dynamic team and contribute to the design and development of next-generation high-speed optical transmitters and receivers. A good candidate should be able to take over the following responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize high-speed silicon photonic transmitters and receivers, with a focus on traveling-wave modulators (TWM), ring modulators, and high-speed PDs.
  • Lead the RF and electro-optic design of active photonic devices targeting 200G/lane and beyond.
  • Model, simulate, and optimize active photonic components using industry-standard tools such as HFSS, Lumerical, or other software.
  • Design and analyze RF structures including transmission lines, impedance-matching networks, electrode structures, and high-speed interconnects for photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
  • Develop and maintain automated design flows, PCells, and layout generation scripts using Python-based tools.
  • Work closely with foundry partners to ensure designs meet process requirements and are compatible with advanced silicon photonics manufacturing platforms.
  • Collaborate with electrical, packaging, system, and test engineers to optimize overall device and system performance.
  • Plan and support tape-outs, design verification, and post-fabrication characterization activities.
  • Analyze measurement data from fabricated devices and drive iterative design improvements based on test results.
  • Contribute to the development of next-generation optical transceivers and photonic switching products for AI and data-center applications.


Preferred Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are preferred to have:

  • Experience with silicon photonics foundries and PDKs.
  • Experience designing high-speed germanium photodetectors and receiver PICs.
  • Familiarity with advanced optical transceiver architectures, including LPO, NPO, and CPO.
  • Experience with high-speed packaging, co-design, and optical assembly technologies.
  • Understanding of optical communication standards and system-level link budgets.
  • Experience with Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) modulators and hybrid photonic integration (optional and plus).
  • Prior experience taking products from concept through fabrication, characterization, and volume manufacturing.


Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, or a related field; or M.S. degree with at least 3 years of industry experience in silicon photonics, high-speed optical communications, or RF design.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing high-speed silicon photonic modulators, including traveling-wave modulators and/or ring modulators.
  • Strong background in RF and microwave engineering, including transmission-line theory, impedance matching, signal integrity, and S-parameter analysis.
  • Expertise with electromagnetic and multiphysics simulation tools such as HFSS, Lumerical (FDTD, MODE, CHARGE, INTERCONNECT), COMSOL, or CST.
  • Experience with PIC layout design and automation using Python-based tools such as KLayout, IPKISS, Nazca, GDSFactory, or equivalent frameworks.
